Course Rules

The ERC Course Rules define the framework for all European Resuscitation Council training activities. They set out the standards for courses, certificates, faculty structure, and training progression, ensuring quality, consistency, and transparency across Europe and beyond.

Objectives

The objective of ERC training is to equip every learner with the ability to provide resuscitation in real situations, at the level expected of them:

  • a lay bystander,

  • a first responder in the community or hospital,

  • a healthcare professional working in an acute area, or

  • a member of a medical emergency or cardiac arrest response team.

Teaching approach

ERC courses are delivered by certified instructors trained in teaching and assessment. Instruction is based on encouragement and constructive feedback, never on humiliation. A culture of mutual respect, professionalism, and teamwork is central to every course, supported by a mentor/mentee system that enhances learning and individual development.

Assessment can be stressful, particularly during practical evaluations, but instructors are committed to creating an environment where candidates can perform at their best, build confidence, and achieve competence.
