Basic life support (BLS) and, when possible, use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) is the first level of care for a person in cardiac arrest. During European Resuscitation Council (ERC) BLS/AED Provider courses, certified instructors will guide and support you in the learning process.
Learning to perform basic life support and to use an automated external defibrillator is an interactive process that requires both knowledge and skills. Part or all of this knowledge and some skills can be obtained by self-instruction and on-line learning.
AEDs are widely available throughout Europe. This course includes training in how to use an AED when one is available. If there is no AED available, start BLS and wait for professional help.
BLS is fundamental to all cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Competence in Basic Life Support is a prerequisite for enrolment for all advanced-level training provided by the European Resuscitation Council.
There are no specific requirements for entry to this course. Anyone may enrol in a Basic Life Support course.
