The European Paediatric Basic Life Support Course (EPBLS) is intended to provide training for anybody who is working with children and could be confronted with a child in (imminent) cardiac arrest (CA). Regular retraining is mandatory.

The Course lasts 4 to 6 hours. At the end of the EPBLS course one should be able to:

  • Assess a child who is not reacting
  • Start resuscitation of a child
  • Adequately perform chest compressions and rescue breaths
  • Safely operate an automated external defibrillator
  • Understand the specific situation of ‘sudden collapse’ and act accordingly
  • Support a choking child
  • Place a child in recovery position
  • Start resuscitation of an adult


There are no specific requirements for entry to this course. Anyone may enrol in a Paediatric Basic Life Support course.
